Understated Beauty and Purpose

A product should have a purpose. It should be used to perform a task, or it should entertain or bring joy in it's use. It's purpose can simply be just to bring beauty to a space or evoke emotion or inspire conversation.

When I create something new, I usually do so with these things in mind. A cutting board for example, has an obvious use. But, why shouldn't it be beautiful enough to display when not cutting on it? Why can't a simple wooden pen make a coworker ask, "That's so unique! Where did you get that pen?"

Most builds have a plan and a determined design to create an item that will serve a purpose. As a passionate woodworker I become connected to a piece through the process. A particular grain pattern or unique characteristic in the wood for example, may catch my eye, and I now know how that detail will play into the build. The build now has beauty and serves a purpose.

Another characteristic of my builds that I adhere to is lasting quality, using timeless techniques and a keen eye on detail. When someone ends up with a piece I made, I want that piece to not only last for them but future generations as well.

  • About wooden bowl and board care

All of my boards and all of my bowls are finished with an oil and wax finish. The finish is designed to seal the wood and protect it from moisture. This does NOT mean they areWATERPROOF!

    Do Not:

    • put in dishwasher
    • soak or submerge in water
    • use bowls for liquids such as soup or cereal
    • use harsh cleaners
    • put in oven/microwave or on heat source

    Do:

    • gently clean by hand using mild detergent and water
    • dry thoroughly
    • apply a wood conditioner such as my Board Butter

By using these tips your board or bowl will not only last a long time(possibly generations!), but it will look great too!
